New Delhi, India — March 23, 2026

India has stepped up efforts to secure its energy supplies amid escalating tensions in West Asia, with fresh crude oil and LPG shipments arriving from diversified global sources.

A Russian crude oil vessel, Aqua Titan, carrying approximately 110,000 tonnes, began unloading at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) in Mangaluru on March 22. Simultaneously, a U.S. LPG shipment reached New Mangalore Port, reinforcing India’s strategy to reduce dependence on volatile Middle Eastern supply routes.

Strategic Shift Away From Risky Routes

These developments come as India looks to minimize exposure to disruptions in critical chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz, which has faced uncertainty due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Officials said diversifying import sources ensures continuity in supply chains, especially for essential sectors such as fuel, fertilizers, and power generation.

Government Review to Ensure Supply Stability

The shipments follow a high-level review chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on petroleum and power sectors.

The government has emphasized:

  • Maintaining uninterrupted fuel supplies
  • Strengthening strategic reserves
  • Increasing domestic production capacity

These steps are aimed at cushioning the economy from global oil price volatility.

Rising Regional Tensions Add Urgency

The urgency of India’s strategy is underscored by escalating rhetoric in the region. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned of “irreversible destruction” to regional infrastructure if Iranian energy facilities are targeted.

The warning follows earlier threats and counter-threats linked to U.S. military plans, which have now been temporarily postponed.

Safeguarding Economic Stability

India’s diversified sourcing strategy is expected to:

  • Stabilize fuel availability
  • Ensure steady fertilizer supply for agriculture
  • Support power generation needs
  • Protect the economy from global price shocks

Experts note that reducing reliance on a single region enhances resilience against geopolitical disruptions.

Integrated Approach: Diplomacy, Evacuation, Energy

Alongside energy measures, the Indian government has undertaken diplomatic outreach and evacuation operations for citizens in affected regions.

This integrated approach—combining energy security, diplomacy, and citizen safety—positions India to navigate prolonged global uncertainty without major supply disruptions.

Outlook: Prepared for Prolonged Volatility

With global oil markets remaining volatile, India’s proactive steps signal a long-term shift toward diversified energy sourcing and stronger domestic capabilities.

Analysts believe these measures will help the country maintain economic stability and supply continuity, even if geopolitical tensions persist.
