Kolkata, India — March 4, 2026
India have secured a place in the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, but concerns over the team’s inconsistent batting lineup have emerged ahead of their crucial clash against England on March 5.
Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India will enter the T20 World Cup semi-finals for the sixth time. However, despite progressing through the group stage and Super 8, the team’s overall performance has not shown the consistent dominance expected from a tournament favorite.
Batting Instability Raises Questions
One of the biggest concerns for Team India has been the lack of consistency in the batting order. Except for Ishan Kishan, none of the Indian batters have delivered steady performances throughout the tournament.
The team has managed to win matches, but the batting lineup has often struggled to build strong partnerships and maintain momentum.
Early Warning Signs Against USA
India’s batting weaknesses were visible from the very first match of the tournament against the United States. The team was reduced to 77 for 6, putting them in serious trouble early in the game.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav then played a crucial knock of 84 runs, stabilizing the innings and helping India avoid an embarrassing defeat. Without that innings, India’s campaign could have started on a disappointing note.
Struggles Even Against Lower-Ranked Teams
Even against relatively weaker sides like Namibia, Indian batters failed to dominate. While Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya contributed with runs, the rest of the batting lineup struggled to score freely.
Players such as Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma were also seen playing cautiously rather than in their usual attacking style.
Against Pakistan, Ishan Kishan again carried the batting responsibility, scoring 77 runs off 40 balls, while other batters failed to produce significant contributions.
Similarly, apart from Shivam Dube’s 66-run innings against the Netherlands, the rest of the batting lineup has often looked fragile.
Problems Deepen in the Super 8 Stage
Expectations were high that India’s batting unit would regain momentum in the Super 8 stage, but the struggles continued.
Against South Africa, the team was bowled out for just 111 runs, raising concerns about the side’s ability to handle pressure in big matches.
India did register their highest score of the tournament against Zimbabwe, but the performance lacked consistency in subsequent games.
In the match against West Indies, Sanju Samson played an impressive innings of 97 runs, yet the rest of the batting order failed to provide adequate support.
Key Batters Yet to Deliver Consistently
Several top-order batters have not lived up to expectations so far in the tournament.
-
Abhishek Sharma has scored only 80 runs in six matches, failing to score in three of them.
-
Suryakumar Yadav’s strike rate has remained around 135, which is lower than his usual aggressive scoring rate.
-
Hardik Pandya has also struggled to produce decisive innings in crucial moments.
So far, no Indian batter has shown sustained consistency throughout the tournament.
Big Challenge Against England
India now face a strong England side in the semi-final, making batting stability even more important.
Cricket experts note that major knockout matches cannot be won relying on one or two individual performances. India will need a collective batting effort with strong partnerships and a clear approach at the crease.
If the top order fails again, the pressure could quickly shift in England’s favor during the high-stakes semi-final encounter.
