GRAP-4 Implemented in Delhi-NCR: Rising Pollution Triggers Stricter Measures
Delhi-NCR has once again found itself under the shadow of severe air pollution, leading to the imposition of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-4). This decisive action has been taken to curb the worsening air quality in the region. Under this stage of GRAP, several stringent restrictions have been enforced to mitigate the pollution levels. Below, we delve into the key restrictions and their implications for daily life and economic activities in the area.
Comprehensive Ban on Construction Activities
In an effort to limit dust and particulate matter, all construction and demolition activities have been halted. This includes work on highways, roads, flyovers, power lines, pipelines, and public projects. The aim is to drastically reduce dust pollution, which significantly contributes to the deteriorating air quality.
Restrictions on Vehicular Movement
To tackle vehicular emissions, non-essential light commercial vehicles registered outside Delhi, except for those running on electric, CNG, or BS-4 diesel, are prohibited from entering the city. This measure is critical in minimizing the contribution of heavy-duty and commercial vehicles to the pollution crisis.
Industrial Operations Under Scrutiny
Industrial operations within Delhi-NCR are under strict surveillance. Factories that do not comply with emission norms or contribute significantly to air pollution will face suspension of activities. This step is crucial to reducing industrial emissions, which are a major contributor to poor air quality.
Prohibition of Open Waste Burning
The burning of garbage, plastics, and other polluting materials in the open has been strictly banned. Enforcement agencies are tasked with ensuring that no such activities occur, aiming to control the release of harmful toxins into the air.
Traffic Restrictions for Heavy Vehicles
To further control vehicular pollution, heavy trucks and loaders are barred from entering Delhi. This step is aimed at reducing the flow of heavy traffic, which significantly contributes to particulate matter and toxic emissions in the city.
Curbing the Use of Pollutants in Daily Life
The use of polythene and other non-biodegradable materials has been restricted. This measure complements the broader initiative to cut down on pollutants that can adversely affect air quality and public health.
Impact of Fog and Reduced Visibility
The current weather conditions have exacerbated the situation, with dense fog reducing visibility to alarming levels. According to the Meteorological Department, areas like Safdarjung and Palam reported visibility as low as 200 meters and 150 meters respectively during early morning hours. The combination of low visibility and high pollution levels poses severe risks to public safety and health.
