Netflix’s upcoming Hindi film “Ghooskhor Pandit,” starring Manoj Bajpayee, has landed in fresh controversy even before its release, with a formal police complaint now filed in Mumbai alleging that the film’s title hurts religious sentiments.
The complaint was lodged at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex Police Station by Karan Singh, an office-bearer of the Constitution Respect Forum. He accused the streaming platform Netflix of promoting content that could negatively impact India’s social harmony and national image.
Protests Over Use of the Word ‘Pandit’
The controversy centers on the use of the word “Pandit” in the film’s title. Members of the Brahmin community have strongly objected, arguing that linking the term with corruption is offensive and defamatory. Protests have been reported in multiple cities, with demonstrators demanding a title change or removal of objectionable content.
The issue has also reached the judiciary, with a petition already filed in the Delhi High Court, seeking intervention over the film’s alleged impact on religious dignity.
“Is Netflix Trying to Incite Unrest?”
Raising sharp questions, Karan Singh said platforms like Netflix must act responsibly in a diverse country like India.
“India is one of the most peaceful nations in the world where people of all religions live together. Content like this disturbs social harmony. Is Netflix trying to provoke communal unrest?” he asked.
Netflix Allegedly Declined Office Meeting
According to Singh, representatives of the group initially tried to meet Netflix officials at the company’s office but were redirected to the police station due to concerns over law and order. A Netflix representative later met them at the BKC police station and assured them the matter would be reviewed.
However, Singh expressed dissatisfaction with the response, calling it a “formality.”
“Unless the controversial portions are removed or the project is withdrawn, and an apology is issued, there will be no real correction,” he said.
“This Is a Fight for National Unity”
Singh emphasized that the organization would decide its next steps after internal consultations. He warned that if Netflix fails to act, legal action and nationwide awareness campaigns could follow.
“This is not just about protest. This is a fight to protect the unity and integrity of the country,” he stated.
Netflix has not issued an official public response to the complaint as of the time of publishing.
