Decathlon’s Expansion in India: Redefining the Sports Retail Landscape

French sportswear retailer Decathlon said that India is a big priority market for it. With the expansion of store network and increased local sourcing, India will be among the top five global markets in the next five years. A top official of the company has said this. A Chief Retail and Countries Officer of the company said that Decathlon will open 10 new stores every year in India as part of its growth plans. The new stores may be smaller stores ranging between 1,000 to 2,000 square metres.

Apart from this, these can also be big stores spread over 4,000 square meters. The company also intends to accelerate online sales and increase local sourcing from the current average of 60 percent to 90 percent in the next five years. The move will help Decathlon become more competitive in the fast-growing Indian sports and athleisure segment and increase exports from its Indian manufacturing facility to global markets. He said at the global event of Decathlon here that India is the top priority for us. We have five countries, which we call quantum leap countries.

India is one of them. India is already among the top 10 markets globally in terms of revenues for Decathlon. We want to make it into the top five. This will happen in the next five years. Decathlon India’s turnover grew by 37 per cent to Rs 3,995 crore in the financial year ending March 31, 2023. He said that we want to open 10 stores every year. We are currently expanding our online presence. We are establishing ourselves digitally. We are working on large format stores as well as small stores in big cities.
