Chennai, India — March 23, 2026
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are gearing up for a crucial IPL 2026 season, aiming for a strong comeback after missing the playoffs in the last two editions.
Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and backed by the experience of MS Dhoni, the team has begun preparations early, signaling a focused approach for the upcoming campaign.
CSK Schedule (First Phase Matches)
- March 30 — vs Rajasthan Royals (Guwahati)
- April 3 — vs Punjab Kings (Chennai)
- April 5 — vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Bengaluru)
- April 11 — vs Delhi Capitals (Chennai)
The BCCI has released only the first phase schedule so far, with more fixtures expected soon.
Strengths: Strong Batting & All-Round Depth
CSK’s biggest advantage this season is its all-round strength. Out of the 25-member squad, 11 players can contribute with both bat and ball.
Players like Shivam Dube, Jamie Overton, and Aman Khan provide balance as pace all-rounders, while spin options include Prashant Veer, Akeal Hosein, and Shreyas Gopal.
The batting lineup looks deeper this season with the addition of Sanju Samson and Sarfaraz Khan. The top order features Gaikwad, Samson, and youngster Ayush Mhatre, while the middle order includes experienced names like Dube, Dewald Brevis, and Dhoni.
Weakness: Bowling Concerns & Dhoni’s Role
Bowling remains a key concern for CSK due to limited experience and injury issues. Khaleel Ahmed and Matt Henry are expected to lead the pace attack, but death bowling options appear limited.
Nathan Ellis has been ruled out due to injury, further weakening the bowling unit. Anshul Kamboj could emerge as a third pacer option.
Another major question is MS Dhoni’s batting position. In recent seasons, he has played primarily as a finisher, often batting lower down the order. If early wickets fall, CSK may face pressure due to this strategy.
Team Combination Challenges
Selecting the right playing XI will be tricky, especially with overseas player combinations. With Ellis unavailable, players like Henry, Noor Ahmad, and Brevis are likely starters.
The fourth overseas slot remains uncertain, with options including Akeal Hosein, Jamie Overton, and others. CSK may also opt for a spin-heavy combination in Chennai conditions.
Opportunity: Big Stage for Young Players
CSK has a reputation for backing players and reviving careers. Young talents like Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma, signed for significant amounts, will have a chance to prove themselves.
Rahul Chahar also has an opportunity to re-establish himself as a key spinner this season.
Threat: Injuries and Inexperience
Injuries remain a major concern for CSK, as seen in previous seasons. Additionally, the team has invested in several relatively inexperienced players.
If these players fail to deliver, the team could struggle. Early matches will be crucial in setting the right combination and momentum.
Comeback Season for CSK
IPL 2026 presents both a challenge and an opportunity for CSK. While the squad is packed with talent, balancing experience and performance will be key.
With Dhoni’s presence providing stability and Gaikwad leading the next generation, CSK will aim to overcome its weaknesses and push for a record sixth IPL title.
