BHIM UPI Launches Auto Top-Up Feature

New Delhi, India | January 22, 2026

UPI-based digital payments have received a major convenience upgrade with the launch of an auto top-up feature on the BHIM app. Users will now see their UPI balance recharge automatically when it falls below ₹200, ensuring uninterrupted transactions.

The new feature is part of UPI Lite Auto Top-Up, introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Users will need to manually enable the auto top-up option within the BHIM app to activate the service.

How the Auto Top-Up Feature Works

Once activated, the BHIM app automatically recharges the UPI Lite wallet from the linked bank account whenever the balance drops below the preset threshold. This eliminates failed payments due to low balance and improves the overall user experience for small-value transactions.

NPCI on BHIM’s Growth and Expansion

Commenting on the new feature, Lalita Nataraj, Managing Director of NPCI BHIM, said the platform is continuously evolving with new technology-driven solutions.

“We are constantly enhancing the BHIM app with advanced technology and user-friendly features,” she said. She also confirmed a recent partnership with Canara Bank, adding that discussions are underway with three to four more public sector banks, which are expected to conclude between April and June.

Strong Growth in Transactions

BHIM recorded robust growth in 2025. Monthly transactions surged fourfold, rising from 38.9 million in January to 165 million in December. Transaction value also climbed sharply, reaching ₹20,854 crore in December.

According to NPCI, strong adoption has been seen across northern Indian states, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, reflecting growing trust in BHIM’s performance, security, and user experience.

Focus on Inclusive Digital Payments

NPCI emphasized that BHIM’s features are designed with inclusivity and ease of use in mind, making digital payments more reliable and accessible across regions and user segments.
