The number of people using cable TV is declining rapidly. People’s jobs are in danger due to the use of internet. About 5.77 lakh people have lost their jobs and in the coming time, more than 10 lakh people may lose their jobs.
Den Networks CEO SN Sharma said that if this situation remains, then in the coming time, about 10 lakh people associated with this sector may lose their jobs. Sanjeev Shankar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, said that the report presented to save this sector is very important. This report tells what challenges the sector is facing, especially due to the content available from the Internet. Some people are using both cable TV and Internet. The government is keeping an eye on this changing situation.
Why should people watch TV?
Sanjeev Shankar said that the biggest question is why people should watch cable TV, especially when better content is available on OTT platforms. He raised the question why such content is not coming on cable TV.
The recent report has been prepared on the basis of conversations with 28,000 cable TV operators. This sector is about 35 years old, yet millions of people associated with it have lost their jobs. Ashish Ferwani said that cable TV subscription was 152 million in 2017, which has now come down to 111 million. DTH has decreased by 31 percent in 2023-24 as compared to 2018-19. Cable subscribers have decreased by 40 percent since 2018.
Why are people moving towards OTT?
According to the report, better content is available on OTT than TV, due to which people are moving towards the Internet. There are 111 million subscribers in 2024, which may fall to 71-81 million by 2030. Employment has decreased by 31 percent (37,835) between 2018 and 2024, from 1,20,557 to 87. There has been a loss of Rs 20,000 crore due to piracy. Meanwhile, internet subscriptions in India have crossed 1 billion, of which 945 million are broadband.

The All India Digital Cable Federation (AIDCF) is the premier organization of digital multi system operators (MSOs) in India. This organization promotes complete digitization of cable TV, broadband and other digital services, so that the dream of a true digital India is fulfilled. This federation works closely with the government, policy makers, regulators and technical institutions. AIDCF members claim that their market share is around 80%. The organization aims to provide 100% television penetration and reliable, high-quality digital content and broadband services to 340 million homes.
