Darjeeling, India — April 21, 2026

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday launched a sharp political attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a public rally in Darjeeling, signaling an intensifying election battle in the state.

Addressing a large gathering in the hill region, Shah said that public sentiment across West Bengal is shifting toward change, adding that “the time has come to remove Didi,” referring to Banerjee.

BJP Pushes for Change in Bengal

Shah urged voters in North Bengal to give the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) another opportunity, emphasizing that while Darjeeling has consistently supported the party in recent elections, broader statewide backing is now crucial.

“People of North Bengal, give BJP a chance to form the government. Darjeeling has supported us in the last three elections, but this time, the entire Bengal has decided that change is necessary,” he said.

Focus on Gorkha Community Issues

Highlighting long-pending concerns of the Gorkha community, Shah promised that if the BJP comes to power, their issues would be addressed on priority.

He claimed that the party would take concrete steps within six months of forming the government to resolve key demands and bring stability to the region. Shah also accused both the Congress and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of neglecting the Darjeeling hills and the Gorkha population over the years.

Allegations of Budget Discrimination

In a direct attack on the state government, Shah alleged disparities in budget allocation. He claimed that approximately ₹2,000 crore was allocated for North Bengal, tribal, and hill regions, compared to ₹5,800 crore for minority-focused schemes.

Calling it “unjust,” Shah said the BJP would ensure fair distribution of resources and prioritize development in underserved regions if elected to power.

⚖️ Law and Order Concerns Raised

The Union minister also raised concerns about law and order under the current administration. Referring to incidents such as the Sandeshkhali case, Shah alleged that crimes against women have increased and criticized the state government’s handling of such cases.

He asserted that under a BJP government, strict action would be taken against offenders and law enforcement would be strengthened.

Multiple Rallies Across Bengal

As part of his campaign tour, Shah is scheduled to address multiple rallies across West Bengal. After Darjeeling, he is set to speak in Kulti in West Bardhaman, followed by Salboni in West Midnapore, and Chandipur in East Midnapore later in the day.

The series of rallies underscores BJP’s aggressive outreach strategy as political activity intensifies ahead of the upcoming state elections.
