PARIS, France — May 20, 2026

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are expected to hold a high-profile meeting next month during the G7 Summit in France, potentially marking their first face-to-face interaction in more than 16 months.

The anticipated meeting has drawn significant international attention as geopolitical tensions, global trade concerns, artificial intelligence policy, and Middle East security remain at the center of global diplomatic discussions.

France Invites India as Special Guest to G7 Summit

The G7 Summit is scheduled to take place from June 15 to June 17 in Evian-les-Bains, France, under the leadership of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Although India is not a formal member of the G7 group, France has invited India as a special partner nation in recognition of its growing influence in the global economy and international strategic affairs.

President Macron had extended the invitation to Prime Minister Modi during his visit to India earlier this year, and French officials have now formally confirmed Modi’s participation in the summit.

Jaishankar Holds Talks With French Foreign Minister

Ahead of the summit, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot during a G7 foreign ministers’ meeting held at Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay.

According to French diplomatic officials, both ministers welcomed Prime Minister Modi’s confirmation to attend the Evian summit and discussed India’s growing role in the global economy and international partnerships.

The discussions also covered critical geopolitical issues, including tensions in West Asia and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. Both sides reportedly agreed on the importance of maintaining regional stability and ensuring the security of key global shipping routes.

Trump Also Expected to Attend G7 Summit

Meanwhile, US media outlet Axios reported that President Trump is expected to attend the G7 Summit hosted by France.

According to the report, the summit will begin one day after Trump’s 80th birthday celebrations in Washington. The report also stated that discussions at the summit are expected to focus on artificial intelligence, trade policy, international crime prevention, energy production, and supply chain security.

A White House official quoted in the report said the summit would primarily aim to build consensus among participating nations rather than finalize formal agreements.

Trump is also expected to push for policies linking American foreign assistance to trade priorities while advocating increased fossil fuel production. Discussions on illegal migration, narcotics trafficking, and reducing China’s control over critical mineral supply chains are also likely to feature prominently during the summit.

Global Focus on Possible Modi-Trump Talks

The potential Modi-Trump meeting is being closely watched by diplomats and policy analysts worldwide, especially as India and the United States continue expanding cooperation in defense, technology, trade, and Indo-Pacific security.

A meeting between the two leaders could also signal renewed momentum in India-US strategic engagement ahead of several key international negotiations expected later this year.

While neither Washington nor New Delhi has officially confirmed a bilateral meeting schedule, diplomatic sources indicate preparations are underway for high-level discussions on the sidelines of the summit.
