Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Sweden on Sunday as part of the third phase of his ongoing Europe tour, with discussions expected to focus on artificial intelligence, green transition, trade expansion, and advanced industrial cooperation between India and Nordic countries.

The visit comes at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and marks an important step in strengthening India’s strategic and economic ties with Northern Europe.

PM Modi to Visit Volvo Group Headquarters in Gothenburg

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to travel to Gothenburg, where he will visit the headquarters of Volvo Group. Ahead of the visit, Volvo Group Chief Technology Officer Jens Holtinger described Modi’s trip as an “honor” and highlighted the strong and growing relationship between India and Sweden.

Holtinger said Volvo Group has been operating in India for nearly 25 years and currently employs around 5,000 people in the country. He also noted that India hosts Volvo’s second-largest global research and development center.

According to the company, India’s rapidly growing economy and skilled workforce make it a crucial long-term strategic market for future industrial and technology investments.

India-Nordic Cooperation Seen as Strong and Strategic

Speaking ahead of the India-Nordic Summit, India’s Ambassador to Norway, Gloria Gangte, said cooperation between India and Nordic countries remains “very strong” across multiple sectors.

She emphasized that India and the Nordic nations share common priorities, including democratic values, green technologies, open economies, and support for a rules-based international order.

Gangte added that the summit offers an important platform for leaders to discuss global and regional issues, particularly at a time of international geopolitical uncertainty.

Historic Norway Visit Before Sweden Leg

Before arriving in Sweden, Prime Minister Modi is undertaking an official visit to Norway from May 18 to 19 for the third India-Nordic Summit and bilateral engagements.

The visit marks the first trip to Norway by an Indian Prime Minister in 43 years and Modi’s first official visit to the country. During the Norway leg, Modi is scheduled to meet King Harald V, Queen Sonja, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

He will also address the India-Norway Business and Research Summit.

Trade, AI and Green Transition to Dominate Sweden Talks

One of the key highlights of the Sweden visit will be Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the European Round Table for Industry event alongside Prime Minister Kristersson.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is also expected to attend the gathering of top European industrial and business leaders.

Discussions during the visit are expected to focus on:

  • Green transition and sustainable technologies
  • Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies
  • Startup ecosystem collaboration
  • Supply chain resilience
  • Defense manufacturing
  • Space cooperation
  • Climate change initiatives

Officials believe the partnership between India’s fast-growing innovation ecosystem and Sweden’s advanced technology-driven economy could open new opportunities for investment and industrial collaboration.

India-Sweden Trade Continues to Expand

The Ministry of External Affairs said both countries will review bilateral ties and explore ways to deepen economic cooperation during Modi’s meetings with Prime Minister Kristersson.

According to official figures, trade between India and Sweden reached approximately USD 7.75 billion in 2025. Swedish investments in India between 2000 and 2025 totaled around USD 2.825 billion.

Diplomatic and business observers view the visit as an important opportunity to strengthen long-term cooperation in technology, sustainability, manufacturing, and strategic innovation sectors.
