In a major leap forward for electric mobility, Chinese battery giant CATL has unveiled a next-generation EV battery capable of ultra-fast charging and significantly extended driving range.
The announcement, made ahead of a major auto showcase in Beijing, positions CATL at the forefront of global EV innovation, intensifying competition with rivals such as BYD.
World’s Fastest-Charging EV Battery
CATL introduced the third-generation Shenxing battery, which it claims can charge from 10% to 98% in just 6 minutes and 27 seconds—making it the fastest-charging EV battery globally.
This breakthrough significantly reduces charging time to nearly the level of refueling a gasoline vehicle, addressing one of the biggest concerns among EV users worldwide.
By comparison, BYD’s widely known Blade battery reportedly takes around 9 minutes to reach 90% charge, placing CATL’s new technology ahead in speed.
Extended Range Up to 1,500 KM
Alongside fast charging, CATL also revealed advancements in its Qilin battery pack, designed to deliver up to 1,000 km range per charge, with future systems targeting 1,500 km under optimal conditions.
Weighing approximately 625 kg, the new battery pack is lighter than previous high-capacity systems, improving vehicle efficiency and performance without compromising range.
This innovation could eliminate “range anxiety,” a major barrier to EV adoption, especially for long-distance travel.
Affordable Sodium-Ion Battery Push
CATL is also accelerating development of sodium-ion batteries, a lower-cost alternative to lithium-ion technology. Mass production is expected to begin by the fourth quarter of this year.
Sodium is more abundant and cost-effective than lithium, which could significantly reduce EV prices and make electric mobility more accessible.
Chinese automaker Changan Automobile is expected to be among the first to integrate this technology into its vehicles.
