Rain, strong winds, and rising heat-humidity create unstable weather conditions across North India

New Delhi, India — April 2, 2026

Weather conditions across North India remain unstable despite the weakening of the Western Disturbance, bringing a mix of rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and rising heat and humidity that continue to disrupt daily life.

According to meteorological updates, regions including Rajasthan, northwestern plains, and hilly areas are still experiencing active weather patterns, with intermittent rain and gusty winds expected to persist.

Rain, Thunderstorms, and Hail Risk Continue

Even as the western disturbance weakens over areas near Pakistan and Jammu & Kashmir, its residual impact is keeping atmospheric conditions unstable.

A cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan has shifted toward northeastern parts of the state, intensifying weather activity. Eastern Rajasthan is likely to witness:

  • Light to moderate rainfall
  • Thunderstorms with lightning
  • Strong winds ranging between 30–50 km/h

Meanwhile, parts of central India face the risk of hailstorms, while weather in other northern plains may remain relatively dry but could change rapidly.

Heavy Rain Alert in Northeast India

The instability is not limited to the north. States in Northeast India—including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya—are under warning for heavy rainfall.

These conditions highlight a broader pattern of uneven and volatile weather across the country.

Rainfall Recorded Across Multiple Regions

Over the past 24 hours, rainfall activity has been reported in several parts of India, including:

  • Western Uttar Pradesh
  • Haryana, Delhi, and Punjab
  • Gangetic West Bengal
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands
  • Coastal Karnataka

Additionally, scattered showers accompanied by thunderstorms were observed in Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and other northeastern states.

Heat and Humidity Add to Discomfort

Alongside rain and storms, rising heat and humidity are making conditions more uncomfortable, significantly affecting daily productivity and outdoor activities.

A recent study published in an environmental research journal highlights that increasing temperatures and humidity levels—linked to climate change—are reducing the number of safe working hours globally.

Climate Study: Growing Impact on Human Activity

Researchers analyzed nearly 75 years of climate data (1950–2024) and found a sharp increase in “unsafe hours” for outdoor activities due to extreme heat.

Key findings include:

  • Unsafe working hours for adults have nearly doubled
  • Elderly populations are most affected, with unsafe hours rising from ~600 to nearly 900 hours annually
  • In some regions, unsafe conditions persist for over three months each year

Regions such as the Persian Gulf, sub-Saharan West Africa, and South & Southeast Asia are among the most severely impacted.

35% of Youth, 78% of Elderly at Risk

The study also found that:

  • Around 35% of young people live in areas where peak summer hours are unsafe
  • Nearly 78% of elderly individuals face severe exposure risks

In extreme cases, some regions are nearing or exceeding livability thresholds, where the human body struggles to regulate temperature without cooling support.

A Growing Climate Concern

Experts warn that the combined effect of heat and humidity is becoming increasingly dangerous, especially in tropical regions. Without access to cooling systems, prolonged exposure could pose serious health risks.
