Weather Takes a Turn Across India, Storm and Rain Alerts Issued
Weather conditions across India have shifted significantly, with widespread rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds impacting several states from Punjab to Chhattisgarh.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an active western disturbance is driving this sudden change, leading to fluctuating temperatures and unstable weather patterns across large parts of the country.
Western Disturbance Triggers Widespread Impact
The current weather system is linked to a strong western disturbance extending from northwest to central India, forming a trough from Punjab to northern Chhattisgarh.
Additionally, upper-level cyclonic circulation and a powerful jet stream moving at speeds of up to 165 km/h at high altitude are intensifying the instability. As a result, many regions are experiencing rain, lightning, gusty winds, and occasional hailstorms.
In Himachal Pradesh, snowfall continued for the fifth consecutive day, while Rajasthan recorded a noticeable drop in temperatures due to rainfall.
East and Northeast India: Heavy Rain and Storm Risk
Eastern and northeastern regions are expected to witness the most intense weather activity.
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to receive heavy rainfall between March 22 and 24, accompanied by strong winds ranging from 40 to 60 km/h.
In parts of West Bengal, storm speeds could reach up to 80 km/h. Odisha may experience winds of 50 to 70 km/h along with hailstorms, raising concerns about potential crop damage.
States across the Northeast, including Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, are expected to see thunderstorms and rainfall continue over the next five days.
South India: Rain with Humidity
Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and Karnataka may receive light to moderate rainfall on March 22–23, with winds blowing at 30 to 50 km/h.
Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry could witness lightning activity. Meanwhile, Kerala, Konkan-Goa, and coastal Karnataka may experience hot and humid conditions, adding to discomfort despite rainfall.
Western India: Light Rain in Marathwada
North India: Rain, Snowfall, and Temperature Drop
States including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will experience light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning between March 22 and 23.
Hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may receive fresh snowfall. Temperatures are expected to drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius, bringing a temporary chill before conditions gradually improve.
IMD Issues Alerts Amid Intensifying Weather Activity
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and possible hailstorms across multiple regions.
Residents are advised to remain cautious, especially in areas prone to strong winds and lightning, and to follow local advisories to minimize risks.
