In a recent interview, veteran forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden said his analysis of the autopsy findings suggests the injuries documented in Epstein’s case are not typical of deaths caused by hanging. Epstein died in August 2019 while being held in a federal detention facility in New York, a case that immediately attracted global scrutiny.
Injury Analysis Raises Doubts
Baden stated that three separate fractures were identified in Epstein’s neck during the post-mortem examination. According to him, such severe fractures are rarely seen in suicidal hangings but can occur in strangulation cases.
He also pointed to three visible marks on the neck—two located toward the front and one at the back—which he said may indicate external compression rather than self-inflicted suspension. Based on those observations, Baden argued that the injury pattern warrants closer forensic review.

At the time of Epstein’s death, the official cause was ruled suicide by Dr. Barbara Sampson, who served as New York City’s chief medical examiner. Baden questioned that determination, noting she was not present during the autopsy and that the death certificate was issued within days.
He added that other medical professionals involved believed additional analysis might have helped clarify the precise cause of death.
