Severe Winter Weather Hits North India

New Delhi | February 3, 2026

Weather conditions across large parts of India deteriorated again on Tuesday as fresh western disturbances triggered rainfall, snowfall, cold winds, and dense fog from the Himalayan region to the northern plains, significantly affecting visibility and daily life.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), two active western disturbances have impacted northwest India, bringing precipitation in the hills and severe fog in several plains districts.

Zero Visibility Reported at Key Air Force Stations

IMD data showed zero visibility at Sarasawa, Agra, and Hindon Air Force stations in Uttar Pradesh during early morning hours, as extremely dense fog engulfed the region. Visibility in several locations dropped below 50 meters, disrupting road and air movement.

Dense to very dense fog was also recorded across Punjab, Haryana, eastern Rajasthan, and parts of Uttar Pradesh from Sunday night through Monday morning.

Rain and Snowfall Lash Himalayan Regions

Light to moderate rainfall and snowfall were reported across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh.

In Himachal Pradesh, snowfall continued in high-altitude areas of Kullu, Lahaul, and Chamba. Heavy snow accumulation led to the closure of the Atal Tunnel, while nearly 90 centimeters of snow was recorded at Rohtang Pass.

A tragic incident was reported from Tosh village near Manikaran, where a vehicle carrying vegetables skidded on snow-covered roads, resulting in one fatality.

Cold Wave Persists Despite Slight Temperature Rise

While some regions recorded a marginal increase in temperatures, the cold wave conditions continued due to icy winds and persistent moisture. In Haryana, Sirsa emerged as the coldest location on Monday, with a minimum temperature of 6.6°C.

Plains including Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and eastern Rajasthan also witnessed scattered light to moderate rainfall.

IMD Issues Rain and Thunderstorm Warning

The IMD has issued warnings for thunderstorms, rainfall, and lightning over parts of eastern Rajasthan, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and central Maharashtra. Residents, especially farmers and outdoor workers, have been advised to remain cautious and avoid open areas during storm activity.

Weather officials said that rain, snowfall, and cold wave conditions may persist through Tuesday, while dense fog could continue in some regions until February 5.
