Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming film “O Romeo” has landed in major legal trouble ahead of its scheduled release, after the daughter of a late Mumbai gangster accused the makers of using her father’s life story without permission.
The Core of the Controversy
The complaint has been filed by Sanowar Sheikh, daughter of the late gangster Hussain “Ustara” Sheikh.
She alleges that:
-
The film uses her father’s life events and likeness without consent
-
His portrayal in the movie appears negative and distorted, harming family reputation
-
Shahid Kapoor’s look, styling and body language in the teaser resemble Hussain Ustara unmistakably
Sanowar has issued a legal notice seeking ₹2 crore compensation, warning that she may seek a stay on the film’s release if her concerns are not addressed.

Reports suggest that the storyline of O Romeo is inspired by a chapter in Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai.
The film, allegedly, touches upon the plot involving:
-
Hussain Ustara
-
Sapna Didi’s plan to assassinate Dawood Ibrahim
Actress Triptii Dimri plays Sapna Didi in the movie.
Filmmakers Deny Allegations
Director Vishal Bhardwaj and producer Sajid Nadiadwala have strongly denied the accusations.
They maintain that:
The film is purely fictional, and any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
The makers assert that no character is intended to represent any real individual.
Trailer Launch Cancelled
Amid the escalating legal dispute and security concerns, the film’s trailer launch event—which was scheduled recently—was abruptly cancelled.
Release Under Uncertainty
O Romeo is currently slated for a February 13, 2026 theatrical release.
However, given the ongoing legal proceedings and the threat of a potential restraining order, the release date now carries significant uncertainty.
Star-Studded Cast
The film features a powerful cast:
-
Shahid Kapoor
-
Triptii Dimri
-
Nana Patekar as Dawood Ibrahim
-
Vikrant Massey
With high expectations surrounding the project, the legal controversy has added an unexpected hurdle just weeks before release.
