Amid escalating tensions and widespread protests in Iran, the country has extended the closure of its airspace for commercial aircraft. The move has prompted Air India to alter several international flight routes to ensure passenger safety, with some flights canceled where rerouting was not feasible.
In an official statement, Air India confirmed that it is avoiding Iranian airspace and using alternative routes for affected flights. The airline has also issued a passenger advisory, urging travelers to check their latest flight status on the Air India website before heading to the airport to avoid inconvenience.
Iran Extends Airspace Shutdown Without Explanation
Iran initially issued a short-term two-hour airspace closure; however, without providing any explanation, authorities extended the ban early Thursday.
A NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) issued to pilots states that the airspace is expected to remain closed until 7:30 a.m. local time.
The Iranian government has not clarified the reason behind the extended closure, but it comes at a time of heightened tension with the United States.
Iran Warns US and Israel Amid Harsh Crackdown on Protests
Iranian officials signaled that individuals detained during the nationwide protests may soon face trials and possible executions. They also warned that any intervention by the United States or Israel in Iran’s internal matters would trigger retaliation.
The warnings emerged as the US reportedly advised some personnel at a major American military base in Qatar to relocate temporarily.
Despite multiple comments from President Donald Trump over the last 24 hours, Washington has not outlined what action—if any—it plans to take against Iran.
Commercial Airspace Closure Adds to Regional Uncertainty
A separate notice to pilots confirmed that Iran’s airspace was shut down for several hours on Thursday morning without explanation, heightening concerns about aviation safety in the region amid the escalating standoff.
Airlines globally often rely on Middle Eastern corridors for transcontinental routes; thus, Iran’s sudden airspace restrictions can cause significant delays, rerouting, and fuel challenges for carriers.
Air India has assured customers that passenger safety remains its top priority and said further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
