Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited film Jana Nayagan continues to grapple with legal uncertainty as the dispute over its certification and release reaches the Supreme Court. The producers, who challenged an interim order issued by the Madras High Court, have now secured a likely hearing date. According to the Supreme Court’s cause list, the matter is expected to be taken up on January 19.
Film’s Release Stuck in Limbo
Originally scheduled for release on January 9, Jana Nayagan could not premiere due to the absence of a censor certificate. The filmmakers approached the Madras High Court, where a single-judge bench ordered the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant the film a certificate. However, a subsequent division bench of the High Court stayed that directive, pushing the producers to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court.
As the legal battle intensifies, the film’s future remains uncertain, with the release date effectively suspended until the apex court delivers clarity.
Why the Certificate Was Denied
The CBFC reportedly raised objections over certain elements in Jana Nayagan, including concerns that parts of the film may hurt the sentiments of a minority community. Additional content-related issues flagged by the Board added to the complications, delaying the certification process.
With no support forthcoming from the CBFC, the production house—KVN Productions—filed a petition before the Madras High Court on January 6. In their plea, the producers stated that the prolonged delay could cause financial losses amounting to ₹500 crore.
The dispute has since moved from the High Court to the Supreme Court, where the matter will now be examined on January 19. The industry and fans await a crucial decision that may determine whether Jana Nayagan sees a timely release or faces further setbacks.
