A severe snowstorm has disrupted travel across the Northeast and Great Lakes regions of the United States, leaving thousands of travelers stranded and over 1,500 flights canceled or delayed between Christmas and New Year’s.
In New York City, around three inches of snow fell by Saturday morning, slightly less than some forecasts had predicted. According to FlightAware, approximately 1,500 flights were canceled from Friday night through Saturday, causing widespread travel disruptions.
Major airports including New York Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport issued warnings on social media, alerting passengers that the storm could severely impact flights.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued hazardous travel advisories from the Great Lakes region to northern Mid-Atlantic states and southern New England, warning of downed trees and possible power outages. Meteorologists predict that the storm will begin to weaken by Saturday morning.
Ahead of the snowstorm, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for half of the state to ensure safety and preparedness during the severe winter weather.
Travelers are advised to check with airlines for updated flight information and avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve.
