India Summons Bangladesh High Commissioner After Threats to Indian Embassy in Dhaka

New Delhi | December 17, 2025

India on Wednesday summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner to New Delhi following serious security threats directed at the Indian Embassy in Dhaka, signaling a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two neighbors.

The move comes amid a rapidly deteriorating security environment in Bangladesh, marked by targeted hate speeches against India and growing concerns over the safety of Indian diplomatic personnel and citizens. In response to the volatile situation, the Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka has been shut indefinitely as a precautionary measure.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) conveyed India’s deep concern over the threats and emphasized the host country’s responsibility to ensure the security of foreign missions under international diplomatic norms.

This development follows India’s statement on December 14, 2025, asserting that it has never permitted its territory to be used against Bangladesh’s interests. New Delhi also urged Dhaka to ensure peaceful and transparent parliamentary elections amid ongoing political unrest.

Officials said the latest diplomatic step underscores India’s firm stance on protecting its territorial sovereignty and the safety of its nationals abroad, while highlighting the fragile state of India-Bangladesh relations during a period of regional instability.
