New Delhi, India : India’s aviation sector is grappling with major disruptions after the Civil Aviation Ministry ordered IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, to reduce domestic flight operations by 10% effective immediately. The order aims to stabilize a network under immense pressure from pilot shortages, dense winter fog, crew scheduling failures, and operational bottlenecks. The disruptions have also triggered fare hikes of up to 300%, straining passengers already dealing with long waits and overcrowded terminals.

CEO Pieter Elbers described the crisis as a result of “unforeseen challenges” and pledged more than ₹500 crore in refunds and compensation for affected travelers. He assured customers that the airline is “working around the clock” to rebuild flight schedules and improve crew deployment.

Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu criticized the airline’s handling of the situation, warning that the government would implement stricter oversight measures to prevent similar failures. “Passenger safety and service are non-negotiable,” he said.
