Patna/Kathmandu, November 10:
Authorities have sealed all India–Nepal border points for 72 hours ahead of the second phase of Bihar Assembly elections, enforcing strict surveillance and mobility restrictions to ensure a fair and peaceful voting process.
The closure, which took effect from midnight on Sunday, applies to all major entry points along the Indo-Nepal frontier, including Raxaul, Jogbani, and Laukaha, which see heavy cross-border movement.
Enhanced Vigil to Prevent Electoral Misuse
Officials said the move was part of a coordinated operation between Indian security agencies and their Nepali counterparts, aimed at preventing illegal movement of cash, liquor, or political material that could influence voters.
“The border will remain sealed till the completion of voting in Phase 2. Strict checks are in place on both sides to maintain law and order,” said a senior Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) officer stationed in East Champaran.
Joint Forces on High Alert
Over 10,000 personnel from the SSB, Bihar Police, and district administrations have been deployed along the border stretch. Surveillance drones, mobile patrols, and vehicle frisking units are operational 24×7 to ensure compliance.
Local district magistrates have been instructed to remain in constant communication with election observers and neighboring Nepali districts such as Parsa and Bara, to coordinate law enforcement efforts.
Border Residents Cooperating
Reports indicate that essential trade and emergency movement will be permitted with prior authorization, but non-essential traffic and public gatherings near the border have been restricted.
Residents in adjoining towns have welcomed the decision, citing the need for a “clean and disturbance-free” election atmosphere.
