UN Security Council Divided on Gaza Ceasefire
The United States has once again vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, along with the release of hostages. Fourteen of the 15 member nations voted in favor, but the US opposition blocked the motion, citing insufficient condemnation of Hamas.
Gaza Conflict Enters 23rd Month
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening as the 23-month-long conflict between Israel and Hamas continues. The resolution described the conditions as “catastrophic”, urging Israel to lift restrictions on humanitarian aid for the 2.1 million Palestinians trapped in the enclave.
US and Israel Stand Firm
The veto has further hardened the positions of both the US and Israel ahead of the annual UN General Assembly, where several nations are preparing to recognize an independent Palestinian state. Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon dismissed the resolution as meaningless, stressing that the fight against Hamas and the safety of Israeli citizens remain the government’s top priorities.
Shifting American Public Opinion
Meanwhile, US public opinion is showing signs of change. A recent survey revealed that nearly half of Americans now believe Israel’s military actions in Gaza have gone too far—up from 40% in November 2023. However, fewer Americans than before want Washington to take an active role in negotiating a ceasefire.
Hunger Crisis and Famine Warnings
The resolution also expressed alarm over the spread of hunger in Gaza, warning of famine if restrictions on relief supplies are not lifted. Reports indicate that Gaza City is already experiencing famine-like conditions, raising concerns about a humanitarian disaster.
Israel Launches New Ground Operation
Despite international appeals, Israel launched a new ground military operation in Gaza City on Tuesday. Military officials said the objective is to dismantle Hamas’s military infrastructure but did not provide a timeline for the operation.
UN Report Alleges Genocide
Adding to global pressure, a report by independent experts of the UN Human Rights Council this week accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The report urged the international community to intervene and hold those responsible accountable.
