San Francisco – : The Meta has officially retired the traditional video format on Facebook and announced that all videos going forward will be published exclusively as Reels. Whether short clips or long recordings, every video will now appear under the Reels format, signaling a major shift in how content is created and consumed across the platform.
The current “Video” tab on Facebook is being renamed to “Reels.” Meta clarified that although the name is changing, video recommendations will still be personalized based on users’ interests and activity patterns.
Until now, Facebook allowed users to choose between uploading a standard video or posting a Reel. Both formats came with different editing tools and layout options. With the new update, that choice is gone — Meta is unifying both systems. This means no more restrictions on video length or format, and Reels will support content in both vertical and horizontal orientations.
Reels on Facebook are also expanding to include long-form and landscape videos, breaking away from the traditional short, vertical format. Alongside this upgrade, Meta is overhauling its publishing tools and privacy settings, allowing users to manage how and where their videos appear more easily.
Another key update affects privacy controls. Meta confirmed that audience settings for both Feed and Reels will now be synchronized. Whatever privacy level a user sets — whether public, friends-only, or custom groups — it will automatically apply across all video uploads. Users will soon be prompted to review these settings to ensure their content reaches the intended audience.
Meta’s move to make Reels the only supported video format on Facebook marks a major shift in platform design, aiming to streamline video creation while keeping up with evolving content trends.
