World trauma day to be observed today at Aiims

World Trauma Day’ observed on October 17 every year World wide  to highlight the increasing rate of accidents and injuries causing death and disability across the globe  and the need to prevent them will be celebrated at All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) today (October 17, 2016) .

To mark the World Trauma day, AIIMS as part of its Diamond jubilee celebrations has organised a Public lecture and panel discussion  on “Road Safety-Creating Safe Road users”.

Eminent Experts at the Panel discussion will include Dr M C Misra, director, AIIMS, Mr K K Kapila, Chairman, International Road Federation (IRF), Dr Rohit Baluja,President, Institute of Road Traffic Education, Dr Amit Gupta, Senior Professor, Trauma

Centre, AIIMS . Other highlights of the function will be poster

“Trauma which means any injury caused to the body may be caused due to many reasons including burns, fires, road accidents, acts of violence but amongst all causes , Road Traffic Accidents is the leading cause of trauma world wide . India accounts for highest number of fatal road accidents  and injuries, about 1.47 lakh people died and over Five lakh got injured of road accidents during the year 2015 alone .  The burden of disease due to trauma is increasing at an alarming rate.” Said MR K K Kapila, Chairman, International Road Federation (IRF) , a global body working for safer roads world wide.

“The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in association with the International Road Federation,(IRF)   and Automobile Association of Upper India (AAUI) have already launched a nation wide programme to impart First aid and life saving techniques training to drivers of Commercial Motor Vehicle drivers to make them become first response and trauma care providers for road accident victims.” Said MR Kapila.

“During the programme, 10,000 drivers of heavy vehicles  will be trained initially  in first aid, basic life support and rescue systems. The training will include applying basic measures to clear victim’s airway and control bleeding, clearing any obstructions and draining any fluid from victims mouth, calling emergency services, performing first aid for the victim, safe handling and shifting techniques to avoid further injury to the victim till the emergency medical services reach. Skills to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) through chest compressions, maintaining breathing, relieving choking at the accident site  and dealing with different kind of bleeding.” Said Mr Kapila.
