The first solar eclipse of the year will take place on March 29, 2025. This will be a partial solar eclipse, while the first lunar eclipse of the year occurred on March 14, coinciding with the festival of Holi.

Although eclipses are scientific astronomical events, they also hold deep astrological and mythological significance. In Hindu mythology, Rahu and Ketu are believed to be the cosmic forces responsible for eclipses, as they periodically swallow the Sun and the Moon to seek revenge, leading to solar and lunar eclipses.

The Mythological Story of Rahu and Ketu

The Churning of the Ocean and the Amrit Kalash

According to Hindu scriptures, when the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the ocean (Samudra Manthan), 14 divine treasures emerged. Among them was the Amrit Kalash (pot of nectar), which had the power to grant immortality.

Both the gods and demons desired the nectar, but the Devas feared that if the demons consumed it, they would become invincible and overpower the universe. This led to a fierce struggle over who would get the nectar.

Mohini Avatar and the Deception

To settle the dispute, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini, an enchanting celestial maiden. Seeing her beauty, the demons became mesmerized and agreed to let Mohini distribute the nectar as she pleased.

Mohini, using her divine charm, started serving the nectar only to the gods, deceiving the demons. The demons, lost in her allure, did not realize they were being tricked.

The Birth of Rahu and Ketu

One of the demons, Swarbhanu, sensed the deception and disguised himself as a god, sitting among the Devas to drink the nectar. However, as soon as he took a sip, the Sun (Surya) and the Moon (Chandra) recognized him and alerted Lord Vishnu.

Angered by the deception, Vishnu beheaded Swarbhanu with his Sudarshan Chakra. However, because Swarbhanu had already consumed some nectar, he had become immortal. This led to his severed head becoming Rahu and his torso becoming Ketu.

Since then, Rahu and Ketu have held a grudge against the Sun and Moon. It is believed that they seek revenge by swallowing them from time to time, causing solar and lunar eclipses on new moon and full moon days.

Scientific Explanation of Eclipses

From an astronomical perspective, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun’s light partially or completely. A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon.

While mythology provides a fascinating perspective, the scientific reality of eclipses has been well-documented by astronomers.
