Washington : According to reports, the Biden administration has been engaged in discussions for several months regarding the possibility of providing Ukraine with weapons that are banned in 100 countries, including some US allies. US National Security Advisor Jack Sullivan acknowledged that the decision is not an easy one and that various aspects have been taken into consideration. However, he stated that the US will not leave Ukraine helpless in its struggle and that they will provide weapons to Ukraine at discounted prices. The intention behind this decision is to assist Ukraine in defending itself against Russian aggression while ensuring minimal harm to Ukrainian citizens.
President Joe Biden himself acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and stated that he had discussed the matter extensively with his colleagues and friends. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, as Ukraine is running low on ammunition and needs weapons to counter Russian tanks. Biden believes that it is crucial for Ukraine to have the means to defend itself effectively.
It’s worth noting that cluster munitions, which are among the weapons being considered, have been banned by more than 100 countries, including some US allies such as the UK, France, and Germany. Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has stated that providing arms to Ukraine is not an option for Berlin due to its commitment as a signatory to the Convention on Cluster Munitions. However, he did not comment on the US government’s decision.
In other news, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell announced that the US has completed the destruction of its declared chemical weapons, according to foreign media reports.
