The United States on Monday officially designated the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) — also known as The Majeed Brigade — as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). The State Department stated the move underscores the Trump administration’s commitment to combating global terrorism.

BLA’s Militant Profile

The BLA was previously listed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) group in 2019. Since then, it has claimed responsibility for multiple deadly attacks inside Pakistan. Notably, the group carried out suicide bombings near Karachi Airport and the Gwadar Port Authority complex in 2024.

Major Terror Attacks and Hostage Crisis

In March 2025, the BLA hijacked the Jaffar Express train traveling from Quetta to Peshawar, taking over 300 passengers hostage. The attack left 31 civilians and security personnel dead. This incident marked one of the deadliest terrorist operations in Pakistan in recent years.

Timing Amid Pakistan Army Chief’s US Visit

The decision comes as Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir is visiting the United States, meeting top political and military leaders in Washington. Analysts view the timing as significant, highlighting heightened US-Pakistan counterterrorism cooperation.

State Department’s Statement

The State Department emphasized that the BLA’s history of targeting civilians, infrastructure, and state institutions necessitated its inclusion in the FTO list. The designation freezes any US-based assets, prohibits American citizens from providing support, and strengthens international efforts to curb the group’s activities.

Global Counterterrorism Implications

By declaring the BLA a Foreign Terrorist Organization, the US signals a stronger stance against militant groups operating from Pakistan’s volatile Balochistan province. This move is expected to intensify intelligence sharing, financial tracking, and joint security measures between Washington and Islamabad.
