Salman Khurshid to Chair the 56th meeting of the Central WAKF Council today

INVC,,

56th meeting of the Central Wakf Council is to be held here today under the Chairmanship of Shri Salman Khurshid, Minister of Minority Affairs, who is also the Chairman of the Central Wakf Council. This meeting assumes additional importance as the Ministry of Minority Affairs had recently announced the Scheme for Computerization of Records of State Wakf Boards. This Scheme is uniformly applicable across all the 29 State Waqf Boards and any other Wakf Board like J&K, making a special request for funding subject to availability of funds. The Scheme is to be implemented during the Plan period 2009-10 to 2011-12 at a total cost of Rs. 22.84 crore. The computerization would introduce implementation of a web based centralized application module for Wakf Management.

In this context, the Central Wakf Council is trying to provide in-service training to the officers of the twenty nine Wakf Boards in the country in Wakf Management. For this, the Central Wakf Council has entered into an understanding with RCVP Noronha Academy of Administration & Management, Bhopal. The in-service training of the officers of the State Wakf Boards in Wakf Management is likely to increase the efficiency to the desired level. There are more than 3.5 lakhs registered Wakf in the country, having lakhs of acres of land. It is felt that better management of the Wakf properties may increase the income from the properties substantially; leading to more welfare activities. This issue of in-service training is likely to be discussed at tomorrow’s meeting of the Council. Earlier, a preparatory meeting of the Chief Executive Officers/officials of the State Wakf Boards was convened by the Council at the Academy on December 26, 2009 which yielded excellent results.

Central Wakf Council is a Statutory Body constituted by the Government of India under Wakf Act, 1995 to advise it on matters pertaining to working of the State Wakf Boards and proper administration of Wakfs in the country. The Council functions as a nodal agency in Wakf matters.
