he Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh dedicated Sports Injury Centre to the nation at the Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, today. Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chief Minister Delhi Ms Shiela Dikshit, Minister of State Mr Dinesh Trivedi, S Gandhiselvan and Delhi Minister of Health Ms Kiran Walia were present on the occasion.
Safdarjung Hospital’s first fully integrated sports injury centre (Arthoscopic and Joint disorders) which will provide a world class treatment for sports related injuries to its Sports Men and Women of the country besides catering to the participants of the Commonwealth Games, 2010.
The Sports Injury Center in its present form has reached to its present heights from a small unit known as “sports injury unit” working under the aegis of Central Institute of Orthopaedics, Safdarjung Hospital during 1995.
The dedicated team of Doctors and Staff of Sports Injury Unit were providing specialized treatment of sports related injuries and disorders to the sports men/women of the country and personnel of Para Military forces which were being referred to this unit from all over the country. The unit handled a total number of 2000 cases and performed about 400 Athroscopies and other joint surgeries annually.
The government of India, Ministry of Health and Family welfare, heeding to the long felt need of the nation and considering the volume of the work being handled by the ‘’Sports Injury Unit’’ in the field of Sports related injuries, decided to establish a most modern Sports Injury Centre in the vicinity of Safdarjung Hospital which had become imminent in view of the ensuing Commonwealth Games 2010 as well.
The Expenditure Finance Committee headed by Secretary ( H&FW) approved the establishment of a Sports Injury Centre and allocated a sum of 70.72 crores from the normal Plan Allocation of the Ministry and Hospital Services Consultancy Corporation (India)ltd., a Govt. of India undertaking was nominated as an implementing agency of the project.
The Sports Injury Centre has an in-patient capacity of 35 beds in two wards which contains four bedded/ three bedded/ two bedded and single rooms with all modern facilities. The Centre will have three world class integrated modular operation theatres with facility of video conferencing.
The Centre in the long run shall also act as a pilot to develop the speciality of Sports Medicine in the country. The Sports Injury Centre will be a permanent asset to the nation and besides catering to the needs of the sports person will continue to provide its specialized services to the general patients sustaining similar injuries and disorders as well. It expects to take care of about 2500 cases in a year pertaining to Arthroscopic and other specialized procedures regarding joint disorders.
The Sports Injury Centre (Arthoscopy and Joint disorders) is housed in a seven storey building, including the ground floor, apart from basement. The Centre is equipped with state of the art Operation Theatres and Physiotherapy Centre with all latest facilities adhering to the global standards and a dedicated team of well experienced and dedicated doctors. It also houses all modern diagnostic facilities such as MRI and CT scan, Digital X Ray, Color Doppler test and Bone Densitometry besides all Laboratory test with the most modern machines which are being wet leased and shall operate on PPP model. Various essential services like CCSD, Laundry, Facility Management and cafeteria are being outsourced.
