Washington  : US President Joe Biden has signed the Resolve Tibet Act to resolve the Tibet dispute peacefully. China had warned the US about this law and asked US President Joe Biden not to sign this law. However, Biden decided to sign the Resolve Tibet Act, ignoring China’s opposition. The ‘Resolve Tibet Act’ states that it is America’s policy that the Tibet issue should be resolved peacefully through dialogue, without any preconditions.

This law has tried to deal with China’s lies about Tibet and also demands China to stop false and misleading propaganda about the history of Tibet. Along with this, this law also empowers the US State Department to deal with China’s misleading claims. The law defines the separate religious, linguistic and historical identity of the Tibetan people. It says that China’s policies are trying to suppress the ability of the Tibetan people to preserve their way of life.

The Dalai Lama, the supreme spiritual leader of Tibet, has repeatedly appealed to China to grant autonomy to the Tibetan people and under international law, people have the right to self-determination. When this law was passed by the US Parliament, a delegation of American leaders also came to India and met the Dalai Lama. Michael McCaul, head of the US Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said that this law will help the people of Tibet to take charge of their future.

China is opposing the Resolve Tibet Act. China had asked the US President not to sign this bill. China’s Foreign Department spokesman Lin Jian had said that ‘Any force that tries to destabilize Xizang or suppress China will not succeed. America should not sign the bill. China will take strict measures for its sovereignty, security and its interests.’ China addresses Tibet as Xizang.

China had said in April this year that it would only talk to the representatives of the Dalai Lama and not the Tibetan government in exile. China has also rejected the Dalai Lama’s demand for autonomy for Tibet. After China’s occupation of Tibet, the 14th Dalai Lama fled from Tibet to India in 1959. Since then, relations between the two sides have been tense.
