Port Blair New Name : Amit Shah Announces Renaming of Port Blair to Sri Vijay Puram as a Tribute to Freedom Fighters

Vijaya Puram is a symbol of victory achieved in the freedom struggle and the unique role of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in it. Andaman and Nicobar have a unique place in our freedom struggle and history. The Union Home Ministry has changed the name of Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to Vijayapuram. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the new name of Port Blair in a post on X. Amit Shah said that under PM Narendra Modi’s vision, to free the country from colonial identity, we have decided to change the name of Port Blair to Sri Vijay Puram. Now another mark of slavery has been erased.

He wrote that the earlier name had colonial heritage. Vijay Puram is a symbol of victory achieved in the freedom struggle and the unique role of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in it. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a unique place in our freedom struggle and history. This island region which once served as the naval base of the Chola Empire is today set to become an important base for our strategic and development aspirations.

It is also the place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose hoisted the tricolor for the first time and is also the Cellular Jail where Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters fought for an independent nation. The central government is constantly changing the names of islands in Andaman-Nicobar. Earlier, the central government had renamed Ross Island after Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island.

Apart from this, Neil Island was renamed Shaheed Island and Havelock Island was renamed Swaraj Island. After this, 21 islands of the Union Territory of Andaman Nicobar Islands were named after Param Vir Chakra winners. PM Modi formally started it on the occasion of Parakram Diwas. Let us tell you that the islands in Andaman Nicobar were not named yet but PM Modi gave a new identity to these islands.
