Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a high-level meeting with Tatsuo Yasunaga, Chairman of the Japan–India Business Cooperation Committee (JIBCC), to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral trade and economic relations between India and Japan. The meeting focused on expanding trade cooperation, fostering innovation in key sectors, and identifying new avenues for mutual growth.
Sharing details of the interaction on social media platform X, Goyal said he had a “productive and meaningful discussion” with Yasunaga and his delegation. The talks explored opportunities to deepen India–Japan commercial engagement, enhance collaboration in strategic industries, and promote innovation-led partnerships that support long-term economic development.
Focus on Trade, Innovation, and Mutual Growth
Both sides emphasized the importance of reinforcing the India–Japan economic partnership, which has steadily grown over the years. The discussions highlighted the need to encourage business-to-business cooperation, technology transfer, and investments in high-growth sectors to ensure shared prosperity.
Goyal expressed optimism about strengthening this dynamic partnership, stating that India and Japan are well-positioned to unlock new opportunities for trade expansion and innovation-driven growth.
India-Japan Bilateral Trade Snapshot
India and Japan maintain strong and expanding trade ties. According to official data, bilateral trade between the two countries stood at $25.17 billion in FY2025. Of this, Japan’s exports to India amounted to $18.92 billion, while India’s exports to Japan totaled $6.25 billion.
Japan accounted for 2.06% of India’s total imports during FY2025, while India’s exports to Japan represented 0.75% of Japan’s total imports. Notably, India exported nearly 3,900 different products to Japan, underscoring the diversity of trade between the two economies.
Key Exports and Imports
Major Indian exports to Japan during FY2025 included:
Engineering goods: $2.44 billion
Organic and inorganic chemicals: $1.06 billion
Electronic goods: $658.45 million
Marine products: $408.45 million
Gems and jewelry: $239.51 million
Drugs and pharmaceuticals: $231.52 million
On the import side, India sourced nearly 4,000 products from Japan, with total imports valued at $18.92 billion. Key imports included:
Nuclear reactors and machinery: $3.31 billion
Electrical machinery and equipment: $2.01 billion
The meeting reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and leveraging their complementary strengths to drive sustained trade growth.
