History was made this morning when the Supreme Court unequivocally ruled to grant women permanent commission in every branch of India’s defence forces. This judgment, widely embraced as a watershed moment, is seen as a victory for both gender equality and the modern Indian military.
Justice Radhika Singh, delivering the verdict, powerfully stated, “No institution can keep women from serving the nation at par with men. Equal respect, equal rights, and equal opportunities—this is the path forward.”
Lieutenant Colonel Meenakshi Rawat, an Army officer, described the ruling as “a turning point that makes young girls everywhere believe that service and sacrifice know no gender.”
The decision is expected to foster more women mentors, commanders, and role models in Indian armed services, inspiring future generations to dream bigger.
