Nowadays arthritis of the knee and other joints is striking at younger age, but shedding a few pounds if you’re overweight may reduce your risk.

“Many people believe that only the elderly suffer from arthritis but these days we treat patients of all ages. Often they are misdiagnosed because they rule out the possibility of having some form of arthritis as they are too young, and the elderly don’t seek treatment as they believe that there is no treatment that is available. As people become more aware of the facts around joint pain, they will be more inclined to seek help”, said Dr. Gurinder Bedi, senior joint replacement surgeon at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. He was addressing a Media Conference at Fortis Hospital.

Addressing Press Conference Dr. Bedi said, “It is a common misconception that autoimmune diseases (AIs), such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) only affect the elderly. Statistics show that both the young and active can also suffer from these debilitating conditions, but patients must not lose hope. Treatment has improved significantly and newer therapies and methodologies including the biologic disease modifying drugs and procedures like arthroscopy and joint replacements have made a tremendous impact on our ability to treat the various types of Arthritis. With the help of these therapies, patients are now able to live a fuller, healthier and more active life regardless of their age”.

On this occasion Dr. Dhananjay Gupta, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital said that in India, Over the last few years, the volume of Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) procedures has increased dramatically and the percentage of TKA patients who are younger than the age of 65 years has also risen substantially. More knee replacements are being performed because the population is getting older and obese – two of the main causes of knee osteoarthritis !
