‘Jana Nayagan’ Case Moves to Supreme Court After Madras High Court Stay

New Delhi | January 12, 2026

The release controversy surrounding Vijay Thalapathy’s upcoming film “Jana Nayagan” has escalated further, with the matter now reaching the Supreme Court. The film’s producer has filed an appeal challenging an interim order issued by the Madras High Court that halted the immediate grant of a censor certificate.

The film, originally scheduled to release on January 9 during the Pongal weekend, could not hit theaters after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) failed to issue the certificate on time. The delay prompted the producer to approach the Madras High Court, where a single-judge bench had directed the CBFC to issue the certificate without further delay. However, within hours, a division bench stayed that order, preventing the film from being cleared for release.

What KVN Productions Has Appealed

KVN Productions, the banner behind “Jana Nayagan,” has now appealed to the Supreme Court against the division bench’s stay order. The production house argued that the High Court’s stay came despite the single judge setting aside the CBFC’s decision to send the film to a revising committee.

According to the producer, they received a letter from the CBFC on January 6 stating that the film had been referred to the revising committee. The single-judge bench struck down that letter and ordered the certification process to be completed immediately. However, the division bench ruled that the CBFC had not been given adequate time to file its response before the order was passed, prompting it to issue a stay on the directive.

The High Court scheduled the next hearing on January 21, but the producer has now sought relief from the Supreme Court in hopes of expediting the film’s clearance.

Why the Film’s Release Matters

“Jana Nayagan” has attracted significant public attention as it is being promoted as Vijay’s final film before his full-time entry into politics. The actor recently launched his political party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), making the film’s release strategically important for his supporters and industry stakeholders.

The certification delay has disrupted the film’s planned festival release, leaving fans awaiting clarity on when the action-drama will finally reach cinemas.
