A one day workshop to formulate an action plan for combating female foeticide organized by the Chandigarh Social Welfare Board was inaugurated by Ms. Ninettee Vas Sharma, W/O Mr. K.K. Sharma, Advisor to the Administrator, Chandigarh Administration.

Ms Sharma voiced that to bring about a change in the attitudes and values of the general public, we as responsible future-makers must start working on our children at a young age. “Nursery rhymes and songs can be a very good medium for school children, especially boys, to imbibe in them, respect for their sister counterparts,” she stressed.

Also present at the workshop was Dr. Pam Rajput, member of the governing body of the Central Social Welfare Board, New Delhi & Executive Director of the UN Resource Centre on Women Empowerment. She denounced the giving away of cash incentives to encourage women to retain female foetus or a girl child and said, “Instead, conditions should be created for voluntary acceptance.”

At the occasion, the Chairperson of the Board Smt. Lalit Joshi also outlined the role of a definitive action and continuous participation of voluntary organizations in combating the menace. This was furthered by a presentation on the present status of female mortality and declining sex ratio by Dr. Bhavneet Bharti, Professor, Advance Pediatric centre, PGI and a discussion to chalk out a clear cut action plan to fight against the problem of female foeticide.

Also present were, over 65 Social Activists, Office Bearers, Executive Members, functionaries of the local voluntary organizations and students from various departments of Panjab University.
