New Delhi : The Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA) is stepping up efforts to boost the global presence of Indian alcoholic beverages as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. With global demand for Indian spirits on the rise, APEDA aims to achieve $1 billion in export revenue from this sector over the next few years. Currently, India ranks 40th in the world for alcoholic beverage exports, but this initiative seeks to significantly enhance its standing.

A notable example of this push is the launch of Godawan Single Malt Whisky in the United Kingdom. This whisky, crafted in Rajasthan, represents a major milestone for Indian spirits in the global market. The first batch of Godawan was flagged off to the UK in a ceremony attended by key officials, including Shri Rajesh Agrawal from the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, and Ms. Debra Crew, CEO of Diageo Plc.

Godawan’s entry into the UK market follows its participation in the International Food and Drinks Event (IFE) in London earlier in March 2024, where it was promoted under APEDA’s banner. The whisky is made using six-row barley sourced from the Alwar region of Rajasthan, supporting local farmers and boosting agricultural incomes through these backward linkages.

This initiative not only exemplifies the potential of Indian spirits in international markets but also aligns with broader economic goals by promoting local agriculture and supporting rural communities.
