New Delhi : The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has achieved a significant milestone by facilitating the first consignment of Indian pomegranates from Mumbai to Melbourne, Australia, on August 31, 2024. This successful export not only highlights India’s ability to meet international quality standards but also opens up new revenue opportunities for Indian farmers.

The consignment was showcased at Fine Food Australia 2024, emphasizing the global appeal of Indian pomegranates. Australia had granted market access to Indian pomegranates in 2020, and with the signing of a work plan and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in February 2024, the export process was streamlined.

India, a major producer of horticulture crops, has significant pomegranate production in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh. APEDA’s Export Promotion Forums (EPF) for pomegranates work to boost exports and address supply chain issues. In the financial year 2023-24, India exported over 72,000 metric tons of pomegranates worth USD 69.08 million to various international markets.

The consignment, sent by M/s. Kay Bee Exports, included 1.1 metric tons of pomegranates packed in 336 boxes. These were sourced from the farms of M/s. Kay Bee Exports and packed at their Australia-approved facility in Ahmednagar. The pomegranates underwent irradiation treatment in Navi Mumbai as per the agreed work plan.

APEDA, under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, continues to support and promote Indian agro and processed food exports through various initiatives, including organizing international exhibitions and exploring new markets.
