New Delhi | January 10, 2026
India is set to witness a sharp weather divide between northern and southern regions on Saturday, January 10, as severe cold wave conditions and dense fog grip large parts of North India, while heavy rainfall is forecast across sections of the south, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
North and Central India: Cold Wave and Dense Fog
In Delhi-NCR, moderate to dense fog is expected during the early morning hours, potentially disrupting road, rail, and air travel. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 17°C, while the minimum may remain near 7°C.
Cold wave conditions are forecast to persist across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, with the IMD issuing severe cold wave warnings for nearly 29 cities in North India. Prolonged exposure to low temperatures and chilling winds is expected to keep daytime conditions harsh.
In the hill states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, isolated areas may experience light snowfall, accompanied by a sharp dip in temperatures.
South India: Heavy Rainfall Alert
In contrast, parts of South India are bracing for heavy rainfall due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to receive light to moderate rain at several places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in isolated areas. The IMD has also issued a rain alert for Kerala and Mahe, while southern districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Nellore, Tirupati, and Chittoor, may see light to moderate showers.
Sea Conditions and Fishermen Advisory
The IMD warned that wind speeds of 45–55 kmph are likely near the Sri Lanka coast and the southwest Bay of Bengal. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions.
Travel, Schools, and Public Advisory
Dense fog in North India may severely reduce visibility, affecting road and rail traffic. Authorities have urged motorists to drive cautiously during early morning hours.
Due to extreme cold and fog, several states in North India have announced school closures to ensure student safety.
Air Quality and Special Observance
While cold conditions continue, weather changes may influence pollution levels in urban centers. Residents are advised to monitor local air quality updates.
Notably, January 10 also marks World Hindi Day 2026, being observed amid challenging winter conditions across much of the country.
For precise and localized forecasts, the IMD has advised the public to refer to its official website and bulletins.
