NEW DELHI — January 9, 2026
Weather conditions across India are expected to remain sharply divided on Friday, January 9, 2026, with northern regions bracing for intense cold and dense fog, while parts of southern India are under a heavy rainfall alert, according to forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
North India: Cold Wave and Dense Fog
Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Rajasthan are likely to remain under the grip of a cold wave, with dense to very dense fog expected during early morning hours. Visibility in several areas may drop below 50 meters, posing risks to road, rail, and air travel.
In the national capital, minimum temperatures are forecast to range between 5°C and 7°C, while the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 18°C. Parts of Rajasthan may continue to experience “cold day” conditions, with daytime temperatures remaining significantly below normal.
South India: Heavy Rainfall Alert
In southern India, the IMD has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated locations across Tamil Nadu on January 9 and 10. Kerala and Puducherry are also likely to receive light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, raising concerns over localized waterlogging.
Central and Western India: Slight Relief From Cold
Mumbai is expected to see pleasant weather with partly cloudy skies. Temperatures in the city are forecast to range between a minimum of around 20°C and a maximum of approximately 28°C.
In Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, minimum temperatures may rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius, providing marginal relief from the recent cold spell.
Eastern India: Fog Persists
Morning fog is likely to affect parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with moderate to dense fog expected in low-lying areas. Minimum temperatures in Bihar and Odisha are not expected to change significantly, though cold wave-like conditions may persist in some pockets.
Travel Advisory
Authorities have advised travelers in northern India to remain cautious, as dense fog could disrupt train schedules and flight operations. Passengers are urged to check transport updates before beginning their journeys.
