India vs Zimbabwe T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight Match

MUMBAI, India — March 1, 2026

India kept its ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026  semifinal hopes alive with a commanding 72-run victory over Zimbabwe in the Super Eight stage, boosting its net run rate and setting up a decisive clash against the West Indies.

The win ensures that India remains firmly in contention for a semifinal berth from Group 1, with qualification now hinging on the outcome of its final Super Eight match.

India Posts Record-Breaking 256 in T20 World Cup

Batting first, India produced its highest-ever total in T20 World Cup history, scoring 256 for 4 in 20 overs — surpassing its previous tournament-best of 218 against England in 2007.

After reaching 176 for 4 at the end of 15 overs, India shifted gears dramatically. Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya powered the late surge, adding 80 runs in the final five overs. The final 12 deliveries alone yielded 36 runs, including back-to-back sixes off the last two balls.

Key performances included:

  • Abhishek Sharma: 55 off 30 balls (4 fours, 4 sixes)

  • Hardik Pandya: 50* off 23 balls (2 fours, 4 sixes)

  • Tilak Varma: 44* off 16 balls (3 fours, 4 sixes)

The explosive finish marked the first time India crossed the 250-run mark in T20 World Cup history.

Zimbabwe’s Fight Led by Brian Bennett

Zimbabwe responded with resilience but never appeared on course to chase the towering target. The team finished at 184 for 6 in 20 overs.

Brian Bennett delivered a standout innings, remaining unbeaten on 97 off 59 balls, striking eight fours and six sixes. He shared a 72-run third-wicket partnership with captain Sikandar Raza, who scored 31 and crossed 3,000 T20 international runs during his knock.

Despite a steady powerplay that yielded 44 runs, Zimbabwe required 126 runs in the final five overs — a gap too large to bridge.

For India, Arshdeep Singh led the bowling effort with three wickets, while Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, and Shivam Dube claimed one each.

Semifinal Scenario: India vs West Indies Decider

South Africa has already secured a semifinal berth from Group 1 following consecutive wins. England qualified earlier from Group 2.

India’s victory eliminated Zimbabwe from the tournament and improved its net run rate to -0.100. However, West Indies remains ahead with a net run rate of +1.791.

With qualification now straightforward, net run rate is unlikely to determine the outcome. The winner of the India vs West Indies Super Eight clash on March 1 will secure the remaining semifinal spot from Group 1.

India’s dominant performance against Zimbabwe has restored momentum — but the road to the final four now depends entirely on delivering under pressure against the hosts.
