India and Russia Agree to Expand Agricultural Trade and Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

India and Russia have agreed to further expand trade and cooperation in the agricultural sector, following a high-level meeting between Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Russian Deputy Prime Minister HE Mr. Dmitry Patrushev at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi.

Strengthening Bilateral Agriculture Ties

The discussions focused on enhancing agricultural trade, improving market access for Indian products in Russia, and promoting technical collaboration. Both leaders emphasized the importance of innovation and technology-driven solutions in agriculture, with particular attention to seed traceability systems, research, and development.

Shri Chouhan highlighted India’s priorities, including food security, enhancing farmer incomes, and ensuring access to safe and nutritious food for all citizens. He reiterated the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family), stressing that international cooperation is vital for farmer welfare and global food security.

Russian Interest and Collaboration

Mr. Dmitry Patrushev reaffirmed Russia’s long-standing partnership with India across multiple sectors, including agriculture, and expressed interest in formalizing cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The discussions also covered academic exchanges, scholarships for students, and joint initiatives to promote innovation in agricultural practices.

Shared Vision for Sustainable Growth

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth in agriculture. Areas of collaboration include:

  • Expanding bilateral trade in agricultural products

  • Strengthening technical and research partnerships

  • Promoting academic and student exchanges

  • Innovation in seed traceability and agricultural technology

Representing India were senior officials from the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Ministry of External Affairs, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and Department of Agricultural Research & Education, among others.
