Mumbai Indians delivered a commanding performance to defeat Gujarat Titans by 99 runs in an Indian Premier League clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday.
Powered by a sensational unbeaten century from Tilak Varma and a clinical bowling display led by Ashwani Kumar, Mumbai registered one of their biggest wins in IPL history.
Tilak Varma’s Explosive Century Lifts Mumbai
After being asked to bat first, Mumbai got off to a shaky start as Kagiso Rabada struck early blows, dismissing Quinton de Kock (13), debutant Danish Malewar (2), and skipper Suryakumar Yadav (15) during the powerplay.
However, Tilak Varma steadied the innings with crucial partnerships. He first added 52 runs with Naman Dhir and later built a match-defining 81-run stand with Hardik Pandya.
Tilak accelerated dramatically after a slow start, smashing 101 off just 45 balls*, registering his maiden IPL century. His knock equaled the fastest century record for Mumbai Indians in IPL history, previously held by Sanath Jayasuriya.
Mumbai finished strong at 199/5 in 20 overs.
Ashwani Kumar Leads Bowling Rout
In reply, Gujarat Titans suffered an early collapse, losing Sai Sudharsan for a duck on the very first ball and Jos Buttler soon after for just 5.
A brief resistance came from Washington Sundar (26) and captain Shubman Gill (14), but Gujarat’s batting lineup failed to build momentum.
Ashwani Kumar, introduced as an impact player, delivered a match-winning spell, picking up 4 wickets for 24 runs. He was well supported by Allah Ghazanfar and Mitchell Santner, who claimed two wickets each.
Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya chipped in with one wicket apiece as Gujarat were bowled out for just 100 in 15.5 overs.
Record-Breaking Outcome
- This victory marks Mumbai Indians’ fourth-largest win by runs in IPL history
- Gujarat Titans were bowled out for their second-lowest total in IPL
The emphatic win boosts Mumbai’s momentum in the tournament, while Gujarat will need to regroup quickly after a disappointing batting performance.
