New Delhi – Amid the wild rise in onion prices, the government has said that it will sell more onions from the buffer stock in retail markets to stabilize the rates. According to government data, the retail price of onion in Delhi is Rs 67 per kg. The average retail price in the country is Rs 58 per kg.
According to officials, due to the festive season and the closure of mandis, there has been a temporary disruption in the supply of onions in some markets in the last two-three days. To overcome this, the government has decided to increase the supply. NAFED has dispatched two racks to Delhi-NCR and one more to Guwahati this week.
According to the official, more supply of onions will be made from NCCF through both rail and road transport. The government has also decided to unload onions kept in cold storage in Sonipat to meet the needs of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and others. Bureau
The government purchased 4.7 lakh tonnes of Rabi onion this year to keep the price stable. Its sale started on September 5 through retail sale at Rs 35 per kg as well as wholesale sale in major mandis across the country. So far, more than 1.50 lakh tonnes of onion in the buffer has been sent to consumer centers through trucks through road transport from Nashik and other centers.
The government said, retail prices of tomato are falling with the fall in prices in the mandis. The weekly average price in Azadpur Mandi has come down by 27 percent to Rs 4,000 per quintal and the average price in Pimpalgaon (Maharashtra) has come down by 35 percent to Rs 2,250 per quintal.
