Gaza Flotilla 2025: Israeli Navy Intercepts Humanitarian Mission Amid Rising Conflict
The Israeli Navy surrounded the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian group attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, raising international concern. The flotilla consists of 50 ships and around 500 activists, including prominent figures like environmental activist Greta Thunberg, Mandela Mandela, grandson of former South African President Nelson Mandela, and several European parliamentarians.
How the Flotilla Was Intercepted
The flotilla was attempting to break the Israeli blockade to deliver food and medicine to Palestinians. Former American soldier Greg Stoker reported that approximately 12 Israeli Navy ships, with transponders turned off, approached the fleet. Activists were instructed to shut down their engines or risk confiscation of their vessels and further consequences.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated the flotilla was near an active war zone and offered alternative, safer routes for aid delivery. Earlier, two warships attempted to jam the flotilla’s communications, including cameras and radios, which activists described as an intimidation tactic. Shortly after, Israeli ships withdrew, allowing the flotilla to continue its journey in international waters north of Egypt.
Activists’ Plan to Reach Gaza
The flotilla’s leadership remains determined. Thiago Avila, the flotilla’s leader, said,
“We are moving a little further every minute.”
Activists broadcasted live, showing chants of “Free Palestine” and solidarity with Gaza, while music played on some ships. If successful, the flotilla may reach the Gaza coast by Thursday, though activists acknowledge possible interception by the Israeli Navy, as in previous missions.
Role of European Countries
European nations have played a supporting role. Italy and Spain previously provided naval protection for the flotilla. Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni expressed concerns that the mission could harm the US-proposed Gaza peace plan. In contrast, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez supported the aid mission and assured full diplomatic protection for Spanish citizens on the flotilla.
The Global Sumud Flotilla highlights ongoing humanitarian challenges in Gaza and increasing international tensions amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
