Mumbai, November 10: Actor–filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has responded strongly to veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah’s recent public critique, describing it as “distasteful” and suggesting that such remarks should have been conveyed privately, given their long-standing friendship.
In an interview following Shah’s comments about the “decline of creative depth” in certain contemporary Bollywood films — a statement widely interpreted as referencing Akhtar’s recent work — Farhan said he was surprised and disappointed that the veteran chose to make his views public.
“I have immense respect for Naseer saab, but if he had an issue with my work, a simple phone call would’ve meant a lot more than public commentary,” Farhan remarked. “We’ve shared years of camaraderie and conversations about cinema — it’s sad to see personal feedback turned into headlines.”
The exchange has sparked a lively debate within the film industry over professional criticism versus personal respect, with several celebrities weighing in on social media. Fans, meanwhile, expressed mixed reactions — some siding with Akhtar’s call for discretion, while others defended Shah’s right to open artistic expression.
Both actors have collaborated in the past and are considered among Bollywood’s most articulate voices. Industry observers note that the episode reflects a growing tension between creative freedom and public accountability in India’s evolving entertainment space.
