Los Angeles : The Meta is considering eliminating the Facebook News feature (News tab) for users in the US and Australia in early April. This feature was discontinued in Britain, France and Germany last year.
The Facebook News tab was launched in 2019 and features news from small and local publications along with national and international news organizations.
Meta says users will still be able to see links to news articles and news organizations will still be able to post their news and promote the website, just like other individuals or organizations.
Meta has decided to de-emphasize news and political content after facing criticism over the past few years over its handling of disinformation on its platform.
A Meta spokesperson said that this announcement is an extension of our years of work towards addressing political content. It’s based on what people want from us. Meta also said the News tab will not impact its fact check network and the way it reviews misinformation.
