Dr. KL Jain, who revolutionize the dynamic transformation of the Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce and Industries will be honored by INVC International award (Manav Ratna) for lifetime achievements
Dr. Kanhaiya Lal Jain (popularly known as Dr. K.L. Jain), a doyen of industry, trade, commerce and exports in Rajasthan, is the President of Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Apex representative body in existence and service for over 75 years. Dr. Jain possesses a dynamic, multi-faceted personality and is very well known amongst people in practically all spheres in Rajasthan.
Dr. Jain, born on April 4, 1934 in Jaipur to late Mr. Govind Ram ji and Mrs. Manbai ji, was brought up by his elder sister, Late Mrs. Pushpaben Shah and her supportive husband, (late) Mr. Kapilbhai Shah. Their conduct, righteousness and magnanimity have left a lasting impression on the psyche of Dr. Jain, which is eloquently reflected in his day-to-day functioning.
Dr. Jain accomplished his academic qualifications in Government Institutions at Jaipur. Dr. Jain’s leadership qualities got manifested in his being jointly elected President by the three streams of Arts, Science and Commerce. Later, at the request of the students, the commerce faculty was segregated into a separate Commerce College but he remained President of the separate Commerce College as well. Such was his popularity that the then Chief Minister, (late) Mr. Mohanlal Sukhadia himself had inaugurated the Students’ Union office. Later, he acquired Doctor’s degree in Corporate Social Responsibility from Netherlands Open Cultural University.
Apart from the family unit engaged in manufacture of woollen carpets, Dr. Jain has interest in shares and securities as well as industrial, financial and management consultancy. Dr. Jain started his career with B.M. Birla group concern, National Engineering Industries Ltd., Jaipur (manufacturer of renowned NBC brand of ball and other bearings) as a Management Trainee and got extensive hands-on training in various fields for about 2 years in Group concerns, including Hindustan Motors and Oriental Engineering Works. He actively participated in establishing a marketing network for Orient Fans in M.P. and Rajasthan.
He later joined L.N. Jhunjhunwala Group of industries and was instrumental in getting State Government equity support for textile mills which culminated in Bhilwara becoming a major textile centre in the State. Subsequently, he joined Jaipur Udyog Ltd., a sick company having a cement plant at Sawai Madhopur, belonging to Sahu Jain Group, as Regional Manager and rose to the level of General Manager – Works at Sawai Madhopur. Here, Dr. Jain surpassed all expectations of the management as well as lenders and the plant, which was operating at only about 30% capacity utilization, became highly efficient with capacity utilization of over 95%.
After successfully reviving the sick unit, Dr. Jain shifted to Jaipur and became involved with the Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce & Industry, both Dr. Jain and RCCI are synonymous with each other.
Dr. Jain is an institution builder. He was instrumental in establishment of Jaipur Stock Exchange Ltd., as promoter and was elected as its President. He remained President for 10 years in three stints. It is to his credit that while in office at JSEL, Dr. Jain did not conduct any sale/purchase of shares and securities and his tenure saw not a single default by any broker of JSEL. In 1994, he had received National Citizenship Award from the hands of the then Vice President, Dr. K.R. Narayanan for his contribution to Capital Markets.
Dr. Jain is a senior active member of the Rotary Club of Jaipur East. He joined Rotary Club in 1962. He was awarded the Rotary Builder Award of District 3050 by the Rotary international President. He is also the recipient of the highest award of the Rotary Club for his outstanding efforts in the Four Avenues of Service.
During his tenure, Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (RCCI), in partnership with Swiss Agency for Development & Cooperation (SDC), had worked for the up-liftment of micro entrepreneurs/micro enterprises in 19 clusters in 5 Districts of Rajasthan, focussing on Gem and Jewellery, Hand Block Printing, Value added Garments/Clothes and use of natural dyes, Namda and Namda Products, Ceramics, Food & Agro Processing and Artefacts and Culture. These clusters have been instrumental in direct and indirect job creation of over 3000 persons (majority being illiterate women), besides exports; many of them have now graduated from micro enterprises to small scale enterprises.
RCCI had also actively worked with other organizations like RUDA and UNCTAD for obtaining Geographical Indication (GI Registration) for Sanganeri and Bagru Hand Block Print industries, besides undertaking a study to assess the impact of GI on ‘Kota Doria’.
Dr. Jain represents RCCI as a Member in various advisory and grievance redressal committees of Central Excise & Customs, Railways, Airport Authority of Jaipur, Permanent Trade Facilitation Committee of Customs, State Labour Advisory Board, etc. Earlier, he had been the member of Direct Taxes Advisory Committee, Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission, and Director of Rajasthan Small Industries Corporation, Rajasthan Housing Board, Rajasthan State Water, Air & Noise Pollution Control Board, Rajasthan State Industrial Development & Investment Corporation Ltd., Rajasthan State Wild Life Protection Board, etc., besides membership of National Railway Users’ Consultative Committee, All India Small Scale Industries Board, LIC Advisory Committee for North Zone, North Zone Export Import Advisory Committee, Jaipur Telephone Advisory Committee, Trustee of Kandla Port Trust as also a member of the Kandla Free Trade Advisory Board, Director of the Governing Board of Bikaner Agriculture University, Member of the Finance Committee of Jodhpur University, Member of the Governing Council of Rajasthan Homoeopathy University, Member of the SEBI’s Secondary Market Advisory Committee, Member of Rajasthan Agricultural Board, etc.
Dr. Jain is also associated with the Indian Council of Arbitration as the Chairman of its Rajasthan chapter, President of the Senior Citizen Council (Regd.), Jaipur, President of Research Development Association, President of Rajasthan State Productivity Council, President of Federation of Associations of Small Industries of Rajasthan since 1970, President of Rajputana Unani Hospital & Research Centre Trust, Promoter & President of Rajasthan Amateur Artistes Association, President of Jaipur Management Association, etc.
Dr. Jain has widely travelled to USA, U.K., Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Mauritius, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Canada, France, Spain, etc., besides frequently visiting all big cities of India.
Dr. Jain is a voracious reader on diverse subjects and has the uncanny ability to recollect relevant information whenever required. He has a religious bent of mind. His extra-ordinary memory and well honed manners have made him well known in all circles of society. He is a friend of friends. His support to Art, Music, Culture, Literature and Sports is well known.
He strongly believes that the youth are the torchbearers for growth and progress of India and extends all help and cooperation to them in fulfillment of their dreams and aspirations. His interest in promotion of youth activities is well known and widely appreciated.
